Job Description:

Montana Instruments, a growing high-tech Company in Bozeman Montana, is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer for our Custom Engineering team. The qualified candidate will be responsible for working directly with the world’s leading researchers and scientists, identifying experiment needs, and creating innovative mechanical designs to meet specifications and requirements. Responsibilities also include individually designing customizations and new products from concept, through prototype, and transition to manufacturing. Position will require the handling of multiple custom jobs simultaneously (up to ~10/month), and often require a thorough understanding of electronics, heat transfer, magnetism, and physics. The ideal candidate will enjoy working in an environment that focuses on quick/accurate results and will raise the bar for design and innovation at Montana Instruments.

The Custom Engineering department offers the unique engineering opportunity to create many innovative designs over relatively short timelines. Typically, a mechanical engineer will finish an entire design within 1-2 weeks and see the finished product being shipped in the following 1-3 months. Additionally, the position exposes the engineer to cutting-edge physics/technology and allows for swift technical growth. This is an exciting position with rapid and varying challenges that requires a very well-rounded and motivated mechanical engineer/physicist.

Key Qualifications:

  • BSME required, MSME preferred with relevant work experience (a physics degree with a very strong mechanical background is also applicable)
  • Highly proficient in Solidworks CAD and experience with FEA software
  • Strong experience in and motivation for developing innovative mechanical designs of technical nature
  • Clear written and verbal communication and strong interpersonal skills
  • Close attention to detail and focus on internal/external customers


  • Independently work with customers to define requirements and manage complex projects
  • Understanding and knowledge of heat transfer and thermodynamics
  • Comfortable working in a prototyping machine shop and designing for machining
  • Understanding of and experience in generating engineering drawings and documentation
  • Understanding and knowledge of manufacturing methods for metals, ceramics, optical materials
  • Ability and desire to work well on fast-paced, results focused team
  • Experience designing for or using optics components preferred
  • Basic understanding of electronics and circuits required, Altium experience preferred
  • Experience with electromagnets and magnetism preferable
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically or internationally up to 4 times/year
