Holding a Sample Stable
A sample should be treated like any other optic on the table; rigidly supported. Montana Instruments provides a standard sample mount element that can be configured in a number of ways. Some applications will require a custom mount. There are a number of techniques for holding your sample within the cold space. The important considerations are mounting the sample firmly, maintaining excellent thermal connection to the sample, and maintaining optical access. Below are some methods for mounting your sample for investigation. Call us to discuss your sample holding needs.

Standard Sample Mount
The Cryostation is provided with a standard cold space mount that can be configured to position your sample in a number of ways. I has a post with flat surface on the end that can be gripped either vertically or horizontally to bring your sample to the center of the chamber or out to any of the windows. There is also a flat surface to grip thin samples for transmission experiments.

Precise Sample Motion with Piezo Stages
Many experiments require that the sample be moved precisely across the optical path. Montana Instruments offers a wide variety of precision piezo stages from Attocube integrated into the Cryostat. Stages are available for translation, rotation, and tilt. The stages may be mounted above the sample platform, as shown in this image. Alternatively, the piezo stages may be inserted into a separate piezo insert shown below.

Recessed Piezo Stages
Your piezo stages may be inserted into a separate piezo insert shown here. This Nanopositioning Insert can be built up with up to 3 stages, and inserted below the normal sample platform. The insert can hold 101 or 51 series piezo positioners from Attocube.

Thermally Damped Electrically Connected Sample Mount (CB12)
For active electrical measurements that require precise temperature control, this mount allows excellent connections to your sample. Ideal for both active control or remote measurements of cooled samples, the contacts on your sample are easily connected to the user interface section outside the cold space. There are two styles of this interface. This is the CB-12 interface board. It allows your sample to be mounted on the central gold surface, and wire bonded to the pads. There are pins on the bottom of the board for cabling to the cold space connectors. The gold post may be mounted horizontally or vertically on the standard sample mount.

Thermally Damped Electrically Connected Sample Mount (LCC28)
The LCC28 sample mount is based on the leadless chip carrier (LCC) standard socket and chip elements. Your sample may be mounted into a 28 pin LCC chip carrier and then easily inserted or removed from the electrical socket mounted on the gold post in the Cryostation. This allows samples to be quickly exchanged yet still obtaining both electrical and thermal connection to the sample.
