1 Job Summary
The Senior Mechanical Engineer IV is a senior technical leader responsible for the architecture, development, and delivery of complex mechanical systems across our product portfolio. This role demands deep expertise in mechanical design, thermal and structural analysis, and system-level integration across disciplines. You’ll lead high-impact initiatives, mentor engineers, and will manage a small team.
2 Essential Duties, Responsibilities, and Expectations
- Lead the design and development of complex mechanical systems, assemblies, and components for scientific instrumentation
- Own the full lifecycle of mechanical projects—from concept and requirements through design, prototyping, testing, and release
- Mentor and manage a small team of mechanical engineers, driving technical excellence and continuous improvement
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Electrical, Software, Manufacturing, and Product Management) to ensure seamless system integration
- Conduct detailed thermal, structural, and tolerance analyses to validate designs under real-world operating conditions
- Manage vendor relationships and oversee procurement of components, tools, and fixtures for prototyping and production
- Develop and implement design standards, documentation practices, and quality control procedures
- Evaluate and adopt new materials, manufacturing processes, and technologies to improve performance and scalability
- Present technical strategies, project updates, and recommendations to senior leadership
- Contribute to strategic planning and roadmap development for future mechanical capabilities
3 Minimum Qualifications (Experience / Education)
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 10+ years of experience in mechanical design and product development
- Proven track record of leading complex mechanical projects from concept to production
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and lead technical teams
4 Competencies // Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s)
- Expertise in precision mechanical design, including CAD modeling, GD&T, and design for manufacturability
- Strong analytical skills in thermal, structural, and vibration analysis using simulation tools (e.g., FEA, CFD)
- Deep understanding of materials, machining, and fabrication processes
- Strategic mindset with ability to align engineering decisions with long-term product and business goals
- Proven leadership and mentoring skills, with experience building high-performing teams
- System-level thinking and cross-disciplinary collaboration skills
- Excellent communication skills, capable of translating complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Experience managing large-scale engineering projects, including planning, resource allocation, and risk mitigation
5 Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing scientific instruments or high-precision mechanical systems
- Background in physics, materials science, or cryogenics
- Familiarity with vacuum systems, thermal management, and vibration isolation
- Experience with ERP systems and engineering documentation workflows
